We find ourselves midway toward the great Christian feast of Pentecost. Pentecost has often been described as the birthday of the church. Until Pentecost Day the disciples didn't amount to very much. They were in the grip of fear, a fear so powerful that it paralysed, it robbed them of all initiative and rendered them impotent.
Jesus however had made them a promise, the promise of a powerful guide and comforter who would lead them in all truth; they were to wait and pray. When Pentecost Day came and the promise of Jesus fulfilled everything was to change utterly. Fear was driven out, cowards became fearless witnesses; the doors locked for fear of the Jews were thrown open. The Holy Spirit poured out on the Apostles on that first Pentecost Day is the very life-blood of the church right to the present day and continues to guide lead an teach.
